Akina Mama wa Afrika is an international, Pan-African, non-governmental development organisation based in Kampala, Uganda. Our origins date back to 1985 in the United Kingdom, where as a community based organisation, we created a space for African women to organise autonomously, network with each other, share skills and expertise, identify issues of concern and speak for themselves, which was critical given that most were experiencing migrant life in the UK.
Today, we focus on strengthening African women's leadership with a view of empowering African Women so they adequately represent and speak for themselves when driving the agenda on issues affecting them.
Translated from Swahili, our name means Solidarity among African women which symbolises the principles of sisterhood which form our core foundation; our ethos is "Speaking for ourselves."

Vision
We envision a world in which African women are socially, economically and politically autonomous and are champions of change in their lives and society.

Mission

To contribute to the full equality of all African Women by strengthening their Individual and collective leadership and by forming strategic partnerships to tackle patriarchy and promote a just and secure Africa.

Theory of Change

We look to establishing our organisation as a model for transformative feminist leadership. We believe that IF,

We use cutting edge methodologies and knowledge grounded in feminist praxis and engage in deep reflection and learning AND invest in enabling the personal transformation of diverse African women into effective feminist leaders AND fuel, support and connect these leaders to take collective action to dismantle patriarchy around critical opportunities and partnerships that advance our political agenda, THEN we create and sustain highly effective African feminist activism that champions social change AND ULTIMATELY contributes to a more just and secure Africa.
