Originally from Rwanda, Leonie is currently based in Kenya where she is working as the Regional Program Coordinator –Community Peace Recovery and Reconciliation with ACCORD.She holds a First Class Honours Bachelor Degree in Education (English and English Literature) and a Master’s degree in Advanced Disaster Management. She has worked on various issues of conflict transformation and Peace building in Africa promoting citizen driven peace recovery and development among various communities in Kenya, Burundi, DRC, Guiney Conakry among others. Leonie believes strongly in the power and ability of African people to deal with conflicts and find solutions to their own problems, one of such approach being “The Community peace recovery and reconciliation” which she has undertaken to disseminate in other parts of the African Continent.
Leonie is advocating for the establishment of reparations funds for women and girls survivors of sexual and gender based violence in post conflict countries; women’s access and ownership of property; women’s active involvement in peace negotiations and post conflict reconstruction programs.
Leonie speaks fluent English and French as well as other local dialects from the East African Community (Kiswahili, Kirundi, Kinyarwanda) and Central Africa (Lingala).
