Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA)

Feminist Leadership Development

Akina Mama wa Afrika in partnership with the Foundation for Women’s Health Research and Development (FORWARD) and Sub-Sahara Advisory Panel (SSAP) with support from Comic Relief is pleased to announce the second phase of the Young Women's Leadership and Mentorship Fellowship Programme under the TuWezeshe Akina Dada Africa-UK Young Women’s Leadership and Empowerment Movement project led by FORWARD UK.

The fellowship that embraces innovative and effective approaches including capacity building, leadership development, mentoring, organizing young women networks and social change communication activities, aims to improve the rights and amplify the voices and actions of East African girls and young women in their fight against all forms of gender based violence.

The TuWezeshe Fellowship is a bespoke leadership mentoring program for women of African heritage[1] working or hoping to work against sexual and gender based violence. Part of the international TuWezeshe Akina Dada Africa-UK Young Women’s Leadership and Empowerment Movement, the one year fellowship offers participants the opportunity to gain core leadership skills, to be mentored by an established woman-leader and to implement their own, funded, project.

The TuWezeshe mentorship program, part of the TuWezeshe Fellowship, will take place over the course of six-months to a year equipping young women with the skills to be leaders in gender based violence. Mentorships will either be one-on-one or in groups depending on the participant(s) project, and mentors will be required to meet at least once a month with their mentees. Depending on availability mentors can meet face to face or via Skype and meetings will be a minimum of 30minutes. Mentors will receive an intensive one-day training on mentorship and will have the chance to meet their prospective mentees on the last day of the Leadership Training Program. Mentor-matching will take place depending on each person(s)’s skills, strengths, weaknesses and availability.

Apply now and be a feminist mentor under the TuWezeshe Fellowship in Uganda, a bespoke leadership development and mentoring program for young African women.

Successful applicants must be willing to participate in all aspects of the fellowship and be prepared to commit a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of two-years to the program.
