Advancing Reparative Justice for African Women and Girls: Reflections from the 7th GIMAC Coordination Meeting with RECs

From 7th to 9th July 2025, Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA) was honoured to be part of the 7th Gender is My Agenda Campaign (GIMAC) Coordination Meeting with the Regional Economic Communities (RECs), alongside the 14th GIMAC Young Women Advocacy Training. The convening took place in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, on the margins of the 7th Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union and the RECs.

Themed “Transforming Policy into Action: Advancing Gender Justice and Reparations for Africans with Regional Economic Committees”, and grounded in the African Union’s 2025 Theme of the Year, “Justice for Africans and People of African Descent Through Reparations”, this gathering brought together feminist activists, youth leaders, policy actors, and regional bodies to build a united front for reparative justice across the continent.

We joined fellow participants in commending the leadership of the African Union, the Women, Gender and Youth Directorate, the Office of the Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security, and the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights for their steadfast commitment to gender-responsive reparations. The efforts of the Regional Economic Communities in initiating consultations on land justice, economic redistribution, and reparations were also applauded.

The outcome document of the convening reflects collective calls to action, including:

  • The establishment of gender-responsive reparations funds and youth and women’s advisory groups.

  • The urgent ratification and implementation of the AU Convention on Ending Violence Against Women and Girls (CEVAWG).

  • A common African position on reparations that is inclusive of women’s historical and contemporary demands.

  • Investments in gender-responsive skills development and alternative education pathways for young women and girls.

These demands are grounded in key continental and global commitments, including the 1993 Abuja Proclamation, the Durban and Accra Declarations, the AU Transitional Justice Policy, and Agenda 2063.

As AMwA, we remain committed to amplifying the voices of African women and advancing transformative justice on the continent.
