Feminist Demands for the UN Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation (UNFCITC)
Akina Mama wa Afrika is honoured to share a powerful new policy brief, Feminist Pathways Toward a Fairer Global Tax Order: Feminist Demands for the UN Framework Convention on International Tax Cooperation (UNFCITC), authored by Lyla Latif. This is an essential read for anyone who cares about justice, dignity, and the well-being of African women and communities.
The brief speaks to a truth that sits at the heart of AMwA’s work: tax justice is feminist justice.
Every year, African and developing countries lose billions through corporate profit shifting, concealed wealth, and illicit financial flows. These losses translate into underfunded schools, clinics without staff or medicine, weakened environmental protection, shrinking agricultural support, and fragile social protection systems.
And when governments cannot provide these essential services, the burden quietly shifts onto women. It shows up in increased unpaid care work, fewer opportunities, heavier responsibilities, and deepening inequality.
Through AMwA’s regional feminist consultations in Senegal, Kenya, and Zambia, African feminists have come together to reflect, to analyse, and to dream of a fairer global system. Their message is clear:
Africa must negotiate boldly.
Gender justice must be at the centre.
Optional protocols must be rejected because they weaken the very reforms we need.
This policy brief brings together these insights and sets out key feminist demands that can reshape global tax governance into a system rooted in accountability, equity, and true African sovereignty.
We invite you to read the full brief and share it widely.
Your engagement helps strengthen the collective call for a global tax order that works for African women, for our communities, and for our future.
