The Effect of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Women Labour Related Rights

Uganda has a progressive employment legal regime, a reflection of the international standards of the International Labour Organization. However, enforcement of these laws has always posed a challenge because the dictates of demand and supply outweigh the aspirations of the laws and policies. The impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on businesses and employment exposed the weaknesses and loopholes in Uganda’s employment policies, with 76% of the business reported to have reduced the size of their work force, some by 50%. This policy brief dissects the effect Covid-19 has had on women Labour rights in Uganda.
