“My name is Pauline Bangirana. I am Limitless. I am a woman, journalist, writer, content creator, communications specialist, Sunday school teacher and a lover of children. I stay in Uganda, Kampala. I am passionate about creating change through the stories I write. Writing for me is therapy and a mode of communication.”
This was Pauline’s most recent description of herself when she applied for the Feminist writing worskshop on May 26th. True to her words, Pauline was limitless. She was one of the 30 young feminist leaders who went through our African Women’s Leadership Institute (AWLI) virtual Feminist and Transformational Leadership Fellowship last year.
Just as ripples spread out when a pebble is dropped into water, her actions had such far reaching effects. After the AWLI, Pauline and her colleagues Lornah Afoyomungu and Sunday Kayom, for their community action projects, set out to bridge the knowledge gap amongst school going girls in Nebbi through Wa Kwan (Let’s Read), a mobile literacy hub using stories and reading to amplify the voices of young girls to speak up about the issues that affect them.
Today, the truth that she is no more brings us to tears. We lost Pauline in the wee hours of the morning of 9th June due to the deadly Corona virus. All our words cannot express the joy and light she brought to all those around her.
Harriet Kamashanyu, one of her cohort alumna like everyone else who’s crossed paths, remembers her fondly for her positive energy. “Pauline was a lively, hearty person that brought positive vibes. I was always eager to check the “Feminist Utopia” group awaiting her energies. She often called out names and she checked in on all sisters. She was lively and easy to go along with. We shall miss all this. Rest in peace my sister,” she said.
Pauline was born 24th May 1991 and had recently turned 30 years. She studied at Immaculate heart Girl’s Nyakibaale -Rukungiri for her ordinary level, joined Naalya Secondary School Namugongo for her Advanced level and later graduated from Uganda Christian University Mukono, with a Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication. She graduated on 31st October 2014. Pauline has left behind her beautiful three year old daughter, who is soon turning four.
She worked with the Monitor Publications Limited as a Freelance Reporter and had just joined the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) Regional Training Facility as a Communications Associate.
Here are some of the tributes from her AWLI family
Pauline was a very amazing friend. I stayed with her and Momo and little Hannah at our house where we occasionally danced every evening. She was social, polite, and was on a spiritual journey to loving God more and more. She loved people and defended them. Pauline was a Guardian Angel. May her soul rest in peace. Patricia Humura
I didn’t know Pauline personally but I am persuaded of her uniting abilities. She was focused, a hard worker and very passionate about the things she did. Pauline was a team player. Shubrah Naiga Kasozi
When your Guardian Angel decides to take leave from her earthly duties, you shouldn’t get scared, just know that she has gone to prepare a better place for you in Heaven!” That is what I told myself today morning when I received a call that Pauline Bangirana was nolonger with us.The COVID-19 pandemic has come to rob us of our good memories, the strongest hinges we had in our sisterhood circle but we won’t let it. Your legacy shall be carried on dear Pauline. If anything, it has strengthened us! Please continue to watch over me and my sisters and little Hannah! Farewell thee beloved Feminist. Shall we meet again! Maurine Tukahirwa
I was not ready to say goodbye to you Pauline. You made each of us smile and live to the fullest each day. But you know what they say, God only takes the best. everything happens for a reason, even if we may not agree. Just promise to look after us and our baby Hannah. I’m glad I was there when you celebrated Hanna’s birthday. I didn’t know it would be the last you would celebrate with her. Oh! no Pauline!!!. May your beautiful soul rest in peace! Musiime Moureen
Pauline, our Pauline! Truth be told, she has been the intersection amongst us, always looking out for each and everyone of us here and loving on all of us unconditionally. Her sense of humor and unmatched intellect defined her uniqueness. Always stretching out to the greatest of the heights, presented her as ‘limitless Pauline’! We shall dearly miss you Maama Hannah! Agnes Nasirumbi
Pauline has a big heart for people always there to check on us, smiles, kind heart, beautiful. Have NEVER met a person like her . We had already planned to register our CAP project as CBO in Nebbi and just in a blink of an eye you are no more. Your book AKINYI THE SHEROSE changed the lives of many girls in Nebbi district during implementation of the wakwan project. Lornah we need to accomplish what we started in her remembrance. Fare thee well loving soul PAULINE BANGIRANA. May the almighty strengthen us, the family and Hannah ???till we meet again. Sunday Kayom
Pauline was a young mother full of energy. She was quick at making friends and keeping them because he keeps on checking on you. She wore that true smile of a friend , so charming and wished others to excel. She was a mover and always loved to take lead. Pauline we have no proper words to describe you, but all I know is that your creator chose to take you at this time as He said in Isaiah 47:11 that But disaster will come upon you; you will not know how to charm it away. A calamity will befall you that you will be unable to ward off. Devastation will happen to you suddenly and unexpectedly may your soul rest forever in eternity Pauline?. Maxensia Nakibuuka
