Four Corners, Strong Movements

1 November 2022

We constantly dream of institutionalising alternatives that centre on care, love, and people in our world. Sometimes, these dreams seem impossible, but our work at Akina Mama wa Afrika over the last 37 years has shown us that what we dream can be achieved. A new reality is possible. Today we celebrate yet another landmark from our dreams with our new logo.

We were named Akina Mama wa Afrika from birth which means Solidarity among African Women, and we have continued to nurture our feminist leadership birthright across the continent. Our refreshed visual brand is our deliberate effort to communicate our dreams for the future clearly and how to achieve them.

As a pan-African feminist leadership organisation operating currently in seven African countries, we recognise the importance of co-creation, movement building, and sisterhood that is transnational and liberatory. That is why we have strengthened the visibility of the four corners of the icon on the new logo that symbolises the four corners of Africa we strive to reach and the four critical tactics we apply to achieve this. We have also added two new elements: an updated font that boldly spells our name and two triangular icons at the top and bottom of the four corners to capture the intersectionality of our work.

We have maintained our colours — earthy green, powerful pink, and feminist purple — because they still speak to our mission of building feminist leadership and collective power. Four corners, Strong Movements is our renaissance into disrupting patriarchal capitalist hegemonic structures in Africa. Our new logo represents the thread that weaves our souls together and reminds us that we are in this together, and only if you are well, we are well too.

We welcome you into this journey, and we hope that as our partners and friends, you feel the renewal to journey with us as we build towards a gender justice, reproductive justice, climate justice, and economic justice world.

The task in the upcoming days will be to update all our documents, website, templates, and social media platforms with the new logo. We realise that changing a logo is a process that can involve many steps and take some time so we will finalise it gradually.
