Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA)

A Legacy of Unity, A Future of Limitless Possibility

For 40 years, Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA) has stood at the forefront of advancing women’s rights, cultivating the voices, vision, and power of African women across the continent. At the very heart of this legacy lies the African Women’s Leadership Institute (AWLI)—our flagship program that has nurtured over 8,000 alumnae who today occupy critical spaces in politics, civil society, corporate leadership, academia, and grassroots organizing.

The AWLI was born in 1997 with a bold vision to harness the power of African women to transform the continent. Today, that vision continues to ripple through parliaments, boardrooms, and grassroots movements

Why the AWLI Matters: An Engine for Transformation

The AWLI is more than a training institute. It is:

  • A Movement Incubator: AWLI alumnae have gone on to found NGOs, lead political parties, draft gender-responsive laws, and spearhead movements that challenge systemic barriers.
  • A Policy-Shaping Force: Our alumnae have influenced crucial frameworks, such as the Maputo Protocol and Agenda 2063, as well as national gender policies, amplifying the voices of African women in governance and decision-making.
  • A Pan-African Network: With over 8,000 members across Africa, the AWLI is a thriving community of leaders united by shared values and solidarity, advancing meaningful political participation, economic justice, climate action and sexual and reproductive health and rights.
  • A Proven Pipeline for Leadership: From community activists to Ministers, UN leaders, and corporate executives, AWLI graduates embody transformative leadership at every level of society.

A Call to Action: Join Us

As AMwA turns 40, we invite you to stand with us—not only to celebrate but to safeguard the future of women’s leadership in Africa. Your sponsorship will ensure the AWLI continues to inspire, train, and connect thousands more women who will write the next chapter of Africa’s story.
